Steph Curry Steals the Show, Klay Thompson Returns in Thrilling Warriors Win
Golden State's star point guard, Stephen Curry, dropped 38 points, including a clutch three-pointer with seconds left, as the Warriors edged out the Portland Trail Blazers in a thrilling 118-112 victory. The win was made even sweeter by the return of Klay Thompson, who came off the bench and played 19 minutes in his first game back from a 2 1/2-year absence.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from the tip, with both teams trading blows throughout. But it was Curry who ultimately proved to be the difference maker. He was unstoppable from the field, hitting 13 of his 21 shots, including 6 of 11 from three-point range.
"Steph was just playing his game," said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. "He's a special player and he has a knack for making big shots."
The return of Thompson was the biggest story line for the Warriors, however. Thompson missed the past two and a half seasons after suffering a torn ACL in 2019 and then a torn Achilles in 2020. His return was met with loud cheers from the home crowd, who were eager to see him back on the court.
Thompson didn't disappoint, finishing with 17 points in his return. While he still looked a bit rusty, it was clear he was back to his old self on the court.
"It felt good to be back out there with my guys," said Thompson. "I'm still getting my legs back but it was awesome to play in front of our home crowd again."
The Warriors are hoping that Thompson's return will help them to make a deep run in the playoffs this season. With Curry leading the way and Thompson back in the fold, they have the potential to be one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
For the Blazers, Damian Lillard continued his impressive season, leading the team with 29 points. But it wasn't enough to overcome Curry and the Warriors.
This game was a reminder of the Warriors' ability to rise to the occasion when they need to. Curry was amazing and Thompson's return was a joyous moment for the team and its fans. As Thompson regains his rhythm and the Warriors build chemistry, the NBA should be on notice.
